AOIME or American Online Invitational Mathematical Exam is a mathematic test competition held each year in the USA. In 2020, Art of Problem Solving (AOPS) and American Mathematics Competitions (AMC) collaborated to support the AOMIE administration. Any math enthusiastic who have or have not qualified AIME I can participate in this examination.
The top-scoring students will then be invited to the United States Online Mathematical Olympiad (USOMO) and the United States Online Junior Mathematical Olympiad (USOJMO).
If you also want to participate in this exam, here’s everything you need to know about AOIME.
What Is AOIME?
AOIME stands for American Online Invitational Mathematical Exam. It is an American online math competition organized every year, mostly in June. Mathematical geniuses who scored outstanding in AMC 10 or 12 can participate in this competition.
The exam is conducted in two phases, AIME I and AIME II. In 2020 due to Covid19, AIME II was shifted online and became AOIME as an online exam. However, students can appear in one of these two competitions.
Format of AOIME
AOIME follows a clear format of 3 hours examination to solve 15 difficult mathematical problems, each carrying 1 mark. Every answer is an integer between 0 to 999. The candidate will get 1 mark for each correct answer and 0 for a wrong answer or unanswered question. Figures are no need to draw with scales.
Additionally, AOIME doesn’t allow any technological gadgets such as a calculator, smartphone or watch in the examination center. Participants can only take a pencil, eraser, pen, blank graph paper, scratch paper, compass and ruler.
Once the 3-hours time is over or they submit the answers, the AoSP system stores the answers to process them for the next level. Students scoring high in the test can proceed to the next stage.
How many questions are on the AIME?
AIME has 15 questions in a 3 hours mathematics examination. Each correct answer is an integer ranging from 0 to 999.
You need to enter a single number in every blank up to 3 digits. Otherwise, even if the answer is correct, you’ll get no marks if you entered it incorrectly. For example, if the answer is 5, you can enter 5, 05, or 005.
Who Organize The AOIME Competition?
AOIME is a self-independent organization. But in 2020, the American Mathematics Competitions (AMC) partnered with Art Of Problem Solving (AoPS) to support the new administration of AOIME.
Rules of The Competition a Student Should Remember
AOIME is one of the most prestigious mathematics competitions in the world. Those who qualify and crack the test are said to be highly talented and brilliant-minded students.
The organizers and authorities of AOIME have set some strict rules for the participants. So, if you’re preparing for this exam, here are the rules and guidelines you must follow:
- The time duration of the exam is 3 hours.
- Each question carries 1 mark. So, you’ll get 1 mark for each correct answer and 0 for the wrong answer.
- AOIME exam doesn’t have negative marking.
- Besides a computer, you won’t be allowed to access any electronic devices such as a calculator, smartphone, smartwatch etc., for the exam.
- You can take pens, pencils, erasers, blank graphs, scratch papers, a compass and rulers to the examination center.
- There’s no need to draw figures using a scale.
- Finally, you can’t make noise or discuss the answers with others in the examination hall.
Frequently Asked Questions
Many students sit for the AIME every year, but very few qualify for the exam as the question standard is very high and critical.
In 2020, 82 students qualified for AIME either through the AMC 10A/12A or the AMC 10B/12B. Whereas in 2021, 91 students have qualified and 3 students got perfect scores in the 2021 AMC 10 or 12.
There are a total of 15 questions in the AIME test, and each carries 1 point. So, you’ll earn 1 mark for each correct answer and 0 for the incorrect/unanswered problem. There is no extra credit or negative marking given. So, the scores are integers between 0 to 15.
Yes, the AOIME qualification is extremely good. As previously said, it’s a highly prestigious examination in the USA as well as at the international level. So, it can bring a bag of opportunities for a student who qualifies for the exam, like getting admission to a top university.
AIME cutoff 2021 is as follows:
AMC 10A – 103.5
AMC 12A – 93
AMC 10B – 102
AMC 12B – 91.5
You can take AIME only once per qualification. But you can take AMC 10 and AMC 12 as many times as you want to appear in AIME.
