Spreading the Word with Viral Marketing
The idea behind viral marketing is that of a pathological virus or a computer virus. By using existing social networks such as friends, acquaintances, and coworkers, a viral marketing campaign is designed to be create excitement or entertainment that people find worthy to pass on to others. Based on the fact that a person will tell three people about a product where they find high satisfaction and eight people when they are dissatisfied, viral marketing uses this natural human characteristic to create product awareness.
A great example of Viral marketing is a company called Blendtec®. While looking for ways to market their heavy-duty blenders, they looked into forums like the Food Network and QVC, where they would have had to pay high prices to get recognition for their product. After seeing their blenders being tested by having it grind up a two-by-four, the president decided that the public needed to see what their blenders could do. They started a web site and also posted on YouTube a video series called "Will it Blend." Roughly 25 million hits later, Blendtec® couldn't keep its blenders on the shelves. Read about what they did at DirectMag.com and see their viral website at WillItBlend.com.
